We caught up with BAFTA team winner and three times Emmy nominee Sarita Allison to ask her about her career and how she came to be such a well known name throughout our industry.Sarita began her career as a Makeup Artist working on photo sessions for a diverse range of artists and designers including Björk, Bob Hoskins, Sir Ben Kingsley, Vivenne Westwood, Issey Miyake and Alexander McQueen. But is now better known for her work on Harry Potter, X-Men and monster heavy series Penny Dreadful.1. When did you know you wanted to become a makeup artist? I used to be fashion model in the ‘80’s, but that job has a shelf life. While on a fashion shoot in Dallas, the idea came to me that I would like to become a makeup artist. Having come from an artistic background and attended Central St Martin’s in London, I felt the desire to do something more creative and challenging. From being a fashion model, a career in makeup artistry seemed like a natural progression for me. Armed with a few good books, such as The Technique of the Professional Makeup Artist by Vincent J-R Kehoe, I started practising makeup on myself and models and slowly built up a portfolio of work. 2. Which 5 items could you not live without in your makeup kit?Le Macquilage Professional Grande Fard Crème PaletteSkin Illustrator ‘Complexion’ PalettePros-Aide adhesiveRussian Red Lipstick by MACVisiora PC Compact Powder 3. Which iconic makeup / sfx look do you admire? And why? There are too many inspirational and iconic makeups to mention, but I’m a huge fan of David Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust and Aladdin Sane. Bowie was a true artist who liberated young people to think outside the norm and experiment with hair and makeup. Bram Stoker’s Dracula, beautifully executed by Greg Cannom and Michelle Burke, The Curious case of Benjamin Button by Greg Cannom, Pan’s Labyrinth by David Marti and Montse Ribé4. What is your top tip for starting out in the industry?Experiment. Put your curiosity into action by playing around with different materials, see how they react to heat and cold, practice on different skin types – use your family and friends as guinea pigs!5. What is your life mantra?Make it better than it needs to be.6. What do you feel is your greatest achievement to date?Being part of the BAFTA-winning team for Penny Dreadful in 2015 and being Emmy nominated three years in a row for the show. 7. What’s your favourite film and why?The answer to this could be different on a week-to-week basis! Today I’m going to say John Carpenter’s The Thing, because I watched it again recently and it still totally stands up as a fantastic horror story superbly well told. 8. If you could travel back in time, where would you go?I’d go back to London in the 1960s, but in my 20s. I was there at the time but I was little. I’d love to have experienced the whole Swinging Sixties revolution. If I had a second choice I’d go back to Bristol in the early 1990s, the day before my boyfriend turned down the chance to buy an original painting by an unknown artist for £300. The artist’s name was Banksy.9. What were you doing this time yesterday?Binge-watching Big Little Lies.If you'd like to see more of Sarita's work here are some wonderful videos to watch or click here to head to Sarita's website! - Harry Potter: Meet the Makeup Artist behind the Magic Warner Brothers Studio Tour - Creature Effects Penny Dreadful - Creating the creature
